"Pure Speech" excerpt from Modern Epistle 3

"Pure Speech" excerpt from Modern Epistle 3

Or have you not read the great commandments of the old covenant? It is written in the second book of the Law: "Do not bear against your neighbor, a false witness." Again in the second book: "Do not raise a false report: Don't join hands with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness." Again in the fifth book of the Law: "Neither shall you bear against your neighbor a false witness." And even in the Proverbs of Solomon: "A false witness shall not be unpunished, he that speaks lies will die." And so, in order to save yourself from the judgments of men and the ultimate judgement of God, abstain from speaking lies, even in jest. What Paul calls: “and filthiness, and foolish talking, or crude joking” Again, Solomon pleads with us: "There are six things which the Lord hates; yes, and seven are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood; a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community." Here, Solomon says twice that bringing anything untrue out of your mouth is an abomination unto His holiness. And here I speak to myself, for I love to make others listen to lengthy stories for laughter’s sake. But! Laughter for laughter's sake is not a quality thing that we should pursue is it? For pursuing this for itself is dangerous, for it gives temptation for raucous, lewd, insincere speech, full of jesting at other's weaknesses. So if we pursue holiness when we talk- we obtain peace... For through holiness comes pure happiness, and also comes pure joy. So that laughter becomes a way of life and not a temporary recourse from our trials and tribulations. So, my stories and tales should be of a true nature or as a metaphor and not anything that would cause my brother to stumble. "And woe to Him who causes even one of these to stumble. It would be better for him that a millstone were tied around his neck and he would be thrown into the sea."
